A laptop and an HDMI cable

The most reliable method and the one to choose whenever the room allows it. Nothing depends on the venue's wi-fi being good enough to stream video, because nothing is being streamed — the laptop is drawing the page itself.

What you need

  • A laptop with a browser
  • An HDMI cable long enough to reach, plus an adapter if your laptop has only USB-C
  • Internet on the laptop — venue wi-fi or a phone hotspot
  • Mains power for the laptop; an evening will outlast most batteries

Setting it up

  1. Plug the cable in and select the input

Connect the laptop to the projector or television, then change the screen's input to the HDMI port you used. They are usually numbered, and the number is printed by the socket.

  2. Set the screen to mirror or extend

Mirroring is simpler. Extending is better, because you can leave the wall full screen on the big display while still using the laptop — useful if you are also running music from it.

  3. Open the wall link and go full screen

Open the link ending in /wall in the browser, drag the window onto the big screen if you extended, then press F11 on Windows or Control-Command-F on a Mac.

  4. Stop the laptop going to sleep

Set the power settings to never sleep while plugged in, and close any screensaver. This is the single most common reason a wall goes dark halfway through an evening.

If something is wrong

The screen says there is no signal

Almost always the wrong input. Cycle through the HDMI inputs on the screen's remote. If that fails, reseat both ends of the cable — and if you are using a USB-C adapter, try a different one, as cheap adapters fail often.

The picture has black bars or is cut off at the edges

Set the laptop's display resolution to match the screen, usually 1920 by 1080. If the edges are cut off, look for an overscan, “screen fit” or “just scan” setting in the television's picture menu.

New photos stop appearing

The laptop has lost internet. Check the wi-fi, and reload the page once it is back. Nothing is lost — the wall catches up with everything uploaded while it was disconnected.
